Nicholas Musonye, Chair of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), has issued a passionate call to Kenyans to turn up in large numbers and support the historic tournament set to kick off in August. Speaking at a press briefing at Nyayo National Stadium, Musonye emphasized that the event is not only a sporting occasion but also a moment of national pride and unity.
“This is our chance to show the unity of purpose as a country. We are a diverse people, but we’ve always come together in the spirit of Harambee. Let us use this tournament to deepen that spirit and leave behind a legacy,” he urged.
To ensure that as many fans as possible get the chance to attend, Musonye announced affordable ticket prices KSh 200 for regular entry, KSh 500 for VIP, and KSh 1,000 for VVIP. All tickets will be sold in advance, with no sales at stadium gates to enhance security and avoid crowding.
Kenya will host Group A matches at the renovated Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The Harambee Stars will kick off their campaign against the Democratic Republic of Congo on August 3, followed by fixtures against Angola (August 7), Morocco (August 10), and Zambia (August 17).
Musonye noted that preparations are in full swing, with participating teams expected to arrive next week. “We’ve already received their arrival schedules and are ensuring everything runs flawlessly, including allocating training grounds to the participating teams,” he said.
The 2024 CHAN marks the first time East Africa is hosting the tournament, a critical step toward the region’s ambition to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Uganda and Tanzania. Musonye believes the success of CHAN will influence CAF’s decision on the 2027 bid.
“With the infrastructure now ready and support from the government, we are confident of hosting a memorable event,” he said.
As the nation gears up for the championship, all eyes are on the Harambee Stars to deliver a performance that inspires and unites a football-loving nation.
