Motorists in Nairobi have been urged to prepare for significant traffic changes ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 matches set to kick off on Sunday, August 3. Authorities have implemented several road closures and diversions across the capital in anticipation of large crowds and heightened security demands during the high-profile continental football tournament.
To ensure the smooth movement of fans, teams, and officials, and to maintain public safety, police have released a comprehensive traffic management plan. The plan will impact several key roads within Nairobi, especially those leading to match venues such as Kasarani Stadium.
Aerodrome Road will be fully closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout beginning Sunday morning. In addition, one lane of Langata Road, from Madaraka to Lusaka Roundabout, and a section of Mombasa Road between Lusaka and Bunyala Roundabouts, will also be restricted.
Traffic officers will be stationed strategically to guide motorists and minimize congestion in the affected areas. Nairobi residents and visitors are strongly advised to familiarize themselves with alternative routes and plan their journeys accordingly.
Motorists traveling from Mombasa Road toward the city centre are encouraged to use the Likoni–Enterprise Road exit near General Motors or access the CBD via the Southern Bypass from Ole Sereni. Those approaching from Langata Road can divert using Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road at Mbagathi Roundabout.
Commuters leaving the CBD for Thika, Ruiru, Juja, or other destinations along Thika Road are advised to consider Kiambu Road or Limuru Road as alternatives. Similarly, those already on Thika Road can use the Eastern Bypass or other mentioned routes to avoid delays near stadium zones.
For football fans attending matches at Kasarani Stadium, public transport vehicles are directed to use the Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road, then proceed via Ngomongo Road to the Ngomongo Roundabout for direct access to the venue.
The traffic diversions will remain in place throughout the tournament period, with adjustments based on match schedules and crowd movement. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official police communication channels to avoid unnecessary inconvenience.
