Nairobi United came from behind to draw 1-1 against Uganda’s NEC FC at Nyayo Stadium, a result that sealed their place in the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup on the away goals rule. The newly promoted Kenyan Premier League side progressed after a 3-3 aggregate draw, having played out a 2-2 stalemate in Kampala during the first leg.
Technical director Salim Ali praised the players for their resilience and tactical discipline, describing the qualification as a historic step for a team only recently elevated to the Kenyan top flight. He admitted, however, that the first half was far from perfect, with NEC dictating much of the tempo.
Ali revealed that half-time substitutions proved decisive in turning the match around. Michael Karamoh and Shami Kibwana were brought in for Enock Machaka and Frank Ouya, changes that helped Nairobi United take control of midfield and push more bodies forward. The adjustments paid off in the 65th minute when Duncan Omala netted the equaliser, shifting momentum firmly in United’s favour.
“It was one-sided in the first half, but the boys responded brilliantly after the changes,” Ali explained, noting how the tactical reshuffle disrupted NEC’s rhythm and allowed his side to dominate the second half.
He highlighted the significance of the achievement, especially for a side still finding its footing in the Kenyan Premier League. “For a newly promoted team to reach this stage, it is incredible. The players showed character and belief.”
Looking ahead, Ali stressed the importance of match fitness, observing that NEC enjoyed the advantage of being midway through their domestic season. Nairobi United, by contrast, had only played two competitive matches so far. Their upcoming league opener against Mara Sugar will therefore be crucial in sharpening the squad before they face Tunisia’s Étoile Sportive du Sahel (ES Sahel) in the next round.
ES Sahel, who advanced after a 3-0 victory over Sudan’s Al Ahli Wad Madani, will provide a stern test. With a place in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup at stake, Nairobi United know they must build on their resilience and tactical discipline to keep their continental journey alive.
