Nairobi United are on the brink of making history as they prepare to face giants Gor Mahia in the FKF Cup final. Despite the massive gulf in experience and pedigree, the newly promoted National Super League champions are approaching the clash with calm determination.
Star midfielder Bichiok Diang believes his side has nothing to fear, framing the showdown as “just another game.” With confidence running high after an impressive run that saw them eliminate FKF Premier League heavyweights KCB, Tusker, Kakamega Homeboyz, and Mara Sugar, Nairobi United have proven they are no fluke.
“The game is played on the pitch. We can only follow the coaches’ instructions and work hard, and from there, we are sure it will not be difficult,” said Diang.
For most players in the Nairobi United squad, the final represents their first taste of top-tier football pressure. Still, Diang says the excitement outweighs any nerves.
“It is a huge deal because most players have not played there before. It has finally come, and we are very ready.”
While many fans view Gor Mahia as clear favorites, Diang is adamant that this doesn’t intimidate the team. With a solid cup run and a recent league title under their belts, Nairobi United feel they’ve earned the right to compete on this stage.
“I think the playing and coaching units do not think about underrating. The fans can, but the players cannot afford to underestimate each other. They have seen we are not pushovers, so it will not be easy.”
The midfielder embraces the underdog role, confident that his team can spring a surprise.
“We have nothing to lose. We want to go play well and hopefully win the game.”
Although he’s determined to lift the trophy, Diang also acknowledged the personal significance of facing Gor Mahia.
“It is an amazing feeling. I have admired Gor Mahia for a long time, so facing them will also be an honour.”
Kick-off is set for 3.00 PM at Ulinzi Sports Complex, where Nairobi United hope to cap off a dream season with a historic cup win.
