Kenya’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are hanging by a thread, but captain Michael Olunga believes there is still plenty to play for as Harambee Stars prepare for their remaining fixtures.
With four matches left in Group F, Kenya sit fourth on six points, far behind leaders Gabon on 18. Ivory Coast, who occupy second, are on the verge of sealing progression. For Kenya, the odds are daunting, but Olunga insists that finishing strong is vital for the team’s long-term ambitions.
The striker points out that winning their final matches could lift Kenya’s FIFA ranking, a factor that will determine the quality of opponents they face in future qualifiers. “In football, you never say never. We have to compete with everything we have because it’s both a responsibility and an honor to represent the nation. If we can fight until the last game and reach 18 points, then we’ll see what happens,” he said.
Olunga added that beyond the immediate results, the goal is to lay a foundation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted in Kenya. Strong performances now would help instill belief, improve team chemistry, and prepare the squad for tougher battles ahead.
Ahead of their clash with The Gambia, the Al Arabi forward expressed optimism that Harambee Stars could deliver victory, especially with home support behind them. Training sessions in the build-up have been described as sharp, with both local and international players blending well. The striker praised the spirit within the camp and promised a competitive showing.
Olunga also credited head coach Benni McCarthy for transforming the team’s mindset. Since taking over, McCarthy has been praised for uniting the squad, instilling confidence, and giving both home-based and foreign-based players the belief that they can compete at the highest level. According to Olunga, this renewed energy has spread beyond the players to fans and stakeholders, creating a sense that the national team is on the right path.
While qualification may be beyond reach, Olunga is adamant that Harambee Stars will keep pushing until the end. For him and his teammates, every game remains an opportunity to build pride, earn points, and make progress for the future.
