Orlando Pirates’ aggressive squad overhaul has placed the Buccaneers in their best position in years to launch a genuine Premier Soccer League title challenge. With quality reinforcements added across all departments, the team finally has the depth that was missing last season. However, this newfound strength has brought its own complications, creating a competitive environment where several talented players now struggle for game time.
Head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has the luxury of multiple high-calibre options in every position, giving him the tools to compete for domestic and continental honours. Yet this depth also presents a management challenge. A dressing room full of ambitious footballers naturally breeds intense competition, and some players who were once central to Pirates’ plans have suddenly found themselves on the periphery.
The most striking example is striker Tshegofatso Mabasa. Despite winning the Golden Boot in the 2023/24 campaign, his minutes have dropped significantly this season. He has featured in only half of Pirates’ league matches, with Yanela Mbuthuma and Evidence Makgopa currently preferred in attack. While Mabasa has scored one league goal in limited appearances, the reduction in his involvement highlights the ruthlessness of the club’s new era.
Young forward Boitumelo Radiopane has faced a similar situation. After being given early opportunities, he struggled to build momentum and has since fallen down the attacking order. Pirates’ early exit from continental competition has further reduced rotation chances, tightening the window for fringe players to prove themselves.
In defence, the battle for the right-back position is especially fierce. Bandile Shandu, once a reliable starter, now finds himself behind several contenders. The emergence of versatile options like Mike Sebelebele has complicated his path back into the team, despite his steady performances.
Midfield competition has also intensified. Goodman Mosele, a player with undeniable potential, has had limited opportunities. His reduced minutes have come at an unfortunate time, as he hoped to strengthen his case for major international tournaments. Meanwhile, creative midfielder Kabelo Dlamini—a long-time fan favourite—has also seen less action, even though his recent cameo showed he still has plenty to offer.
Orlando Pirates’ star-studded squad gives them the firepower to contend for multiple trophies, but balancing the needs of elite players will require careful management. If handled well, the depth could be their greatest weapon; if not, it may become a source of internal tension as the season progresses.
