Owen Farrell is set to make his long-awaited British and Irish Lions tour debut this weekend when the squad takes on an AUNZ Invitational XV in Adelaide. The 33-year-old fly-half arrived in Australia on Friday, replacing Elliot Daly who suffered a broken arm, and joined training immediately as the Lions intensified preparations for the upcoming series against the Wallabies.
This marks Farrell’s fourth Lions tour, but Saturday’s fixture will be his first appearance this time around, with head coach Andy Farrell his father confirming that the veteran is in contention for selection. Farrell has cleared all concussion protocols following a head injury sustained while playing for Racing 92 against Lyon, his final match of a challenging season that also saw him undergo groin surgery. He featured in just 17 games during the 2024–25 campaign.
Despite arriving from Europe just days ago, Andy Farrell believes his son is adapting well to the time zone and environment. “I wouldn’t say he’s over the jet lag just yet. I think he was up all night, but haven’t we all been through that? But the rest is fine,” the Lions boss remarked.
Saturday’s clash will be the Lions’ final warm-up before the crucial first Test against Australia on July 19 in Brisbane. Owen Farrell’s inclusion would bring valuable experience and leadership to the side as they look to build momentum heading into the series.
All eyes will be on Adelaide as the Lions seek to sharpen their edge with Farrell possibly at the helm.
