Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang once again reminded the football world of his class after delivering a sensational four-goal performance as Gabon cruised past Gambia in their World Cup qualifier at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The veteran striker showed why he remains one of Africa’s top marksmen, scoring in the 20th, 42nd, 62nd, and 78th minutes to seal a commanding win for the Panthers.
Although Aubameyang’s evening ended on a sour note after receiving a red card later in the match, his masterclass was enough to secure Gabon’s position as serious contenders in the qualification race. The victory saw the Panthers maintain second place in their group with 22 points, just one behind leaders Ivory Coast, who thrashed Seychelles 7-0 in their fixture.
Speaking after the game, the 36-year-old forward reflected on his performance with trademark confidence and charisma. “At my age, the most important thing is to keep working hard and stay fit. I think I’m fit. I had good assists from my teammates, and I was clinical — four shots, four goals, top striker, you know,” he said with a smile.
Aubameyang admitted that his motivation came from a desire to bounce back after a disappointing showing in Gabon’s previous goalless draw against Ivory Coast. “I wanted to show the way after our last match where I didn’t perform as expected. This time, I needed to lead by example, and I did it,” he added.
The former Arsenal and Barcelona star also took time to acknowledge the Kenyan supporters who filled the stadium to watch him in action. Having played in Kenya before during Gabon’s 2-1 win over the Harambee Stars in March, Aubameyang expressed gratitude and admiration for the local fans. “I’m very happy to be here again in Kenya. The atmosphere is amazing, and the people are very kind. Thank you for the love and support,” he said.
Gabon will now turn their attention to their next World Cup qualifying clash against Burundi on Tuesday, October 14 at the Stade de Franceville. A win in that fixture could see Aubameyang and his teammates edge closer to securing a historic spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
