The Police Sacco Stadium is undergoing a significant transformation ahead of the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), in a move that signals Kenya’s growing ambition to host major continental football events. The renovations, spearheaded by the Ministry of Interior, are part of a broader plan to elevate the facility to professional standards in time for CHAN and future inter-agency and youth tournaments.
Internal Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo confirmed on Thursday that the stadium upgrades are aimed at establishing Police Sacco Stadium as a high-performance sports and training hub. Among the most notable improvements is the installation of high-quality floodlights, allowing for evening and all-weather training sessions a critical feature for modern football schedules.
In addition to lighting upgrades, the stadium’s playing surface is being rehabilitated to meet international standards. New infrastructure has also been introduced, including modern changing rooms, referee rooms, well-equipped washing areas, and state-of-the-art conference facilities. These enhancements are designed to support professional matchday operations and facilitate detailed team planning and tactical briefings.
“The stadium is now fitted with vital facilities that meet the requirements of modern football,” said Omollo. “This upgrade positions Police Sacco Stadium as a premier training ground and a hub for youth tournaments and inter-agency competitions.”
Omollo emphasized the broader benefits of the project, noting its role in strengthening ties between disciplined service teams and local communities while promoting values such as teamwork, discipline, and national pride. The upgrade has also created employment opportunities for local artisans, engineers, and service providers.
“Its completion is expected to spur growth in local businesses from transport and catering to merchandise and accommodation amplifying its impact beyond sport and into economic revitalisation,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, is also undergoing a major facelift in preparation for both CHAN 2025 and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027. The 60,000-seater stadium has received CAF approval and is poised to join the ranks of Africa’s premier sports venues, reinforcing Kenya’s readiness to host world-class football events.
