The Driftwood 7s tournament roared into action at the Mombasa Sports Club, marking a thrilling start to the 2025 National Rugby 7s Circuit. With top-tier action across Division One and Division Two, fans were treated to a weekend of fast-paced, high-intensity rugby showcasing the best of Kenyan sevens talent.
In Division One, the established giants made bold statements. KCB Rugby launched their campaign in dominant fashion, securing a 24-14 win over Daystar Falcons, before dismantling hosts MSC Rugby 43-00. Their ruthless form continued with a crushing 40-00 victory against Nondescripts RFC, positioning them as early favourites for the overall title.
Kabras Sugar RFC also impressed, delivering a clinical 26-00 win over Nakuru RFC, followed by a 21-07 triumph over Impala RFC and a solid 29-00 defeat of Catholic Monks. Their fluid attacking play and disciplined defence underlined their title ambitions.
Defending circuit champions Kenya Harlequins kicked off their title defense with a hard-fought 14-07 win against KU Blakblad. They followed it up with a confident 17-00 shutout of Mwamba RFC and wrapped up the weekend by thrashing MMUST 45-00, signaling their intent to retain the crown.
Strathmore Leos also maintained a perfect record, easing past Kabarak University 28-00 and Stallions Rugby 26-00. Their toughest test came against Menengai Oilers, but they emerged 14-05 victors, completing a flawless start to their campaign.
The Division Two competition was equally captivating. KCA University pulled off a major upset with a narrow 5-0 win over Kilifi Titans. Mean Machine underlined their pedigree with a 31-00 dismantling of North Coast Stormers, while NYS Spades bagged back-to-back wins against KCNP (31-00) and Makueni RFC (17-07).
South Coast Pirates edged Vihiga Granites 15-12 in one of the weekend’s most tightly contested games, adding to the drama and unpredictability in the second tier.
The successful launch of the Driftwood 7s has set the tone for a fiercely competitive National Rugby 7s Circuit, as teams across both divisions chase glory in the upcoming legs.
