Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris has signed a new long-term contract until 2028 following a remarkable debut season in charge that culminated in the club’s return to the Premier League. Appointed in June 2024, Le Bris took the reins after leaving French side Lorient and immediately made an impact at the Stadium of Light.
Under his leadership, the Black Cats finished fourth in the Championship, earning a place in the play-offs. A dramatic semi-final win over Coventry was followed by a 2-1 victory against Sheffield United in the final at Wembley. The result secured Sunderland’s long-awaited return to the top flight after an eight-year absence.
Le Bris expressed gratitude for the support he has received and outlined his ambitions for the club’s future. “The connection I have with the staff, players, and supporters has been natural, and we shared many great moments together,” he said. “The collective ambition is there to see, and now there is a desire to become stronger. I can feel the energy and intent to push forward, and we need that in the next challenges we will face.”
He also emphasized the unified approach within the club: “In every part of the organisation, everyone has their own part to play, and we are all aligned.”
As preparations for the 2025-26 Premier League season continue, Sunderland have been active in the transfer market. Among their eight summer signings is experienced Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka, who previously played for Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen. The additions reflect the club’s intent to not only survive in the Premier League but to build a competitive identity.
Director of Football Florent Ghisolfi highlighted the importance of Le Bris to Sunderland’s long-term ambitions. “Regis’ new contract is a mark of recognition for the outstanding work he’s undertaken since arriving, and more importantly, it reflects our trust in the future we’re building together.”
Sunderland begin their Premier League campaign at home against West Ham on August 16, and with a renewed sense of purpose, the Black Cats will be looking to make a strong impression under Le Bris as they return to English football’s top tier.
