MC Alger coach Rulani Mokwena has expressed caution ahead of his team’s CAF Champions League group stage matches, highlighting the challenge posed by Congolese side St Eloi Lupopo.
While MC Alger finds themselves in a competitive group alongside South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns and Sudanese club Al-Hilal, Mokwena insists that Lupopo cannot be underestimated. The Congolese side has made waves this season, most notably eliminating an in-form Orlando Pirates team during the second preliminary round.
“The spotlight is often on Hilal, Sundowns, and even MC Alger, but not much is said about Lupopo. For all three of us, they present a big challenge because of what they achieved against Orlando Pirates,” Mokwena said.
Lupopo’s impressive run included a commanding 3-0 victory in Congo against the Pirates, followed by a 3-0 loss in Johannesburg. The tie went to penalties, where Lupopo emerged victorious. This remains their only defeat in eight matches this season, which also includes five wins and two draws, underlining their consistency and resilience.
Mokwena praised Lupopo’s tactical setup and physicality, emphasizing their speed and aggressive offensive play. “They are well-coached, with a lot of physicality and aggressive runners. Their offensive line is very fast, and they will be a difficult team to face. It’s going to be a very interesting and tight group,” he said.
MC Alger begins their campaign with a match against Al-Hilal after the international break. While Sundowns and Hilal are considered major threats, Mokwena’s focus on Lupopo reflects the growing respect for Congolese football in the continental tournament.
The group promises competitive clashes, with every team eager to outperform last season. For Mokwena, preparation and careful analysis of every opponent, especially Lupopo, will be key to MC Alger’s ambitions in the CAF Champions League.
