Ryan Ogam has admitted that the responsibility of raising the Kenyan flag in the Austrian Bundesliga is a significant challenge, but the Harambee Stars striker is determined to embrace it. The 21-year-old forward touched down in Vienna on September 25 to complete his transfer to Wolfsberger AC, becoming the first Kenyan to play in Austria’s top football division.
The move comes after Ogam’s standout performances during the African Nations Championship (CHAN), where he scored crucial goals for Kenya. His achievements on the continental stage earned him a spot in the Austrian Bundesliga, marking a major milestone in his career.
Upon arriving in Vienna, Ogam expressed his excitement about the opportunity. “This is a massive dream come true for me, and I am really excited to finally be here,” he said. “I know the task ahead is huge, and I feel honoured to have the responsibility of flying the Kenyan flag high. I am looking forward to the challenge and I am ready for it.”
Ogam’s immediate goal is to settle in quickly with his new club, familiarize himself with the culture, and contribute to the team’s success. “I am excited to start training with the rest of the team, immerse myself in the culture, and start playing football. My ambition is to perform well and keep scoring goals to help the team achieve its targets,” he added.
At the CHAN 2024, Ogam was one of the standout players, scoring vital goals against Morocco and Zambia, both of which secured victories for Kenya. His contributions were instrumental in Kenya’s progression to the quarterfinals, where they were eliminated.
His performances at the tournament, coupled with his previous success in the FKF Premier League, have put him on the radar of European clubs. Ogam first rose to prominence with Tusker FC, where he finished the 2024 season with 15 goals despite missing the second half of the campaign due to injury. This goal-scoring form has now earned him the chance to showcase his talents in the Bundesliga.
As he embarks on this new chapter of his career, Ogam is focused on building on his success and helping Wolfsberger AC meet their targets. With his determination, skill, and ambition, he is set to make a significant impact in Austria and continue to raise the profile of Kenyan football on the global stage.
