Ryan Ogam has shared how a powerful message from Benni McCarthy inspired him to score the decisive goal in Harambee Stars’ stunning victory over Morocco at the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024).
Stepping in for Austin Odhiambo, who had already been in fine scoring form during the tournament, the Tusker FC striker made his mark in the 42nd minute. His goal proved enough as Kenya, reduced to ten men, held firm to secure all three points in a dramatic encounter.
Ogam admitted that when he began his football career, he never envisioned himself as a striker. Originally playing as a defensive midfielder, he only transitioned to the forward role about a year ago. However, under the guidance of McCarthy a former prolific striker he has quickly grown into the role and is now becoming one of the country’s most promising attacking talents.
McCarthy, who has occasionally told Ogam that his playing style reminds him of his own during his prime, urged the 20-year-old before the match to give his all without worrying about the clock. That simple piece of advice, Ogam revealed, allowed him to focus fully on the game and seize the opportunity when it came.
“I think the main message was to give my best on the pitch, even if it was only for 45 minutes,” Ogam reflected. “I thank God for the goal, and now my morale is very high. I hope to keep scoring as we progress in the tournament.”
The young striker also credited the incredible support from the Kenyan fans, who filled the stadium with energy and belief. According to him, the crowd’s growing presence as the match went on gave the team an extra push to fight until the final whistle.
“The support from the fans has been impeccable, and this win is for them,” Ogam said. “When the match progressed, more kept coming, and that really motivated us.”
As Harambee Stars prepare for their final group stage clash against Zambia on Sunday, August 17, Ogam is determined to build on his momentum. He hopes to once again find the net and help secure a spot in the quarterfinals, continuing a remarkable personal journey that began far from the penalty box but is now thriving inside it.
