Preparations for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 have gained momentum following a comprehensive inspection of key sporting venues in Nairobi. Top security officials conducted a high-level visit to Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Friday, August 1, ahead of the tournament kick-off on August 2.
Leading the delegation were senior officials from the State Department of Interior and the National Police Service. The inspection prioritized critical areas such as operational zones, players’ changing rooms, access points for fans and participants, and perimeter security arrangements.
The visiting officials expressed satisfaction with the state of preparedness at both venues, citing strong coordination in security, protocol, and logistics. According to the delegation, the infrastructure and planning already in place are adequate to support the safe and smooth running of the continental tournament.
The team reiterated the government’s strong commitment to ensuring the safety of players, officials, and spectators throughout the competition. Security remains a central focus, with authorities keen to maintain order and facilitate a welcoming environment for all attendees.
This inspection follows a recent announcement by traffic authorities in Nairobi outlining the changes that will affect city roads during the tournament. With matches being played in the capital, several major roads will be closed temporarily to ease the movement of teams, officials, and fans. Alternative routes have been designated, and city residents have been urged to cooperate with traffic management teams during the event.
Also involved in the inspection were senior members of the CHAN Local Organising Committee, including its chairperson and CEO, alongside senior police commanders from various units. Their presence underscored the scale and seriousness of the security preparations.
With all logistical elements reportedly in place, Kenya appears ready to host the CHAN 2024 tournament, showcasing both its organizational capabilities and commitment to delivering a successful sporting event. As teams and fans begin to arrive, the focus now shifts to execution, with security and hospitality remaining top priorities.
