Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has voiced his frustration over what he perceives as a lack of respect following their friendly defeat to Brazil, ahead of their upcoming clash with Kenya’s Harambee Stars.
The African champions went down 2-0 to Brazil, who took the lead through first-half goals from Chelsea forward Estevao and Manchester United midfielder Casemiro. While the loss was not the main issue for Thiaw, the manner in which the match was organized left him unhappy.
Thiaw highlighted that the organizers allowed Brazil to train at the Emirates Stadium in London despite an earlier directive stating that neither team would be allowed on the pitch before the match. Senegal, however, were denied the same opportunity.
“This is a heartfelt outcry, and I’m not saying this because of the defeat,” Thiaw said. “The organizers did not respect us. Brazil trained on the field while we were not allowed. It’s a lack of respect, and I wanted to highlight that.”
Despite his disappointment, the 44-year-old acknowledged that Brazil were the superior team on the day. He also felt that Senegal, who were unbeaten for 26 matches before this defeat, could have scored at least once.
“When you concede two goals very early in the first half, it is always challenging against a team of this calibre,” Thiaw noted. “In the second half, we improved and I believe we deserved at least one goal.”
The Senegal coach now shifts focus to their next friendly match against Harambee Stars in Turkey on Tuesday, November 18. He emphasized the importance of regrouping and learning from the defeat as they continue preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations.
The encounter with Kenya will give Senegal the chance to regain momentum and address the tactical lessons from their loss to the five-time world champions. Thiaw remains keen on ensuring his team is treated fairly in all preparations moving forward, as they aim to defend their African title
