In a bold tactical move during the CHAN 2024 opener, Harambee Stars deployed Manzur Suleiman Okwaro traditionally a left-back or centre-back as a defensive midfielder, and the 20-year-old delivered a standout performance in Kenya’s 1-0 win over DR Congo.
Okwaro’s role was unorthodox but executed with maturity beyond his years. Although he had never previously featured in midfield in a competitive match, he adapted seamlessly. On the ball, he was calm and efficient, offering a passing outlet for Alphonce Omija and Sylvester Owino as Kenya built from the back. His short, accurate passes helped maintain tempo, while off the ball, he excelled at cutting off passing lanes, using his speed and physicality to screen the back four.
The decision to play Okwaro in midfield stemmed from behind-closed-doors friendlies and training observations. Initially considered for the left-back position, his athleticism, bravery, and tactical intelligence convinced the coaching staff he could handle a more central, disruptive role. The move paid off, especially against DR Congo’s plan of using their target man and No. 10 as key link-up players.
Okwaro’s positioning allowed Alpha Onyango and Austin Odhiambo to play further up the pitch, which proved crucial. Onyango dictated play from midfield and Odhiambo scored the decisive goal. With Okwaro covering ground and protecting the defence, both were freed to exploit space and create chances. This tactical shift gave Kenya a numerical and strategic advantage in central areas.
Though his long-term position remains in defence, Okwaro’s midfield debut showcased his versatility and value to the national team. His performance disrupted DR Congo’s rhythm and neutralised their most potent attacking threats.
As Kenya prepares to face Angola under the Kasarani floodlights in their second Group A match, Okwaro’s emergence as a midfield enforcer adds a new dimension to the squad. If this display is a sign of things to come, the Harambee Stars possess tactical depth and adaptability that could carry them far in this tournament.
