World champion boxer Terence Crawford found himself in a tense situation early Sunday morning when Omaha police stopped him for reckless driving just hours after a parade in his honor. The traffic stop, which involved Crawford’s vehicle being ordered to pull over at gunpoint, quickly drew attention, leading to a police investigation.
The incident took place around 1:30 a.m. when officers in downtown Omaha noticed a vehicle driving recklessly. Upon approaching the car, they discovered a firearm on the driver’s side floorboard. All four occupants were ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint. The driver was later identified as Crawford, who had just enjoyed a hometown parade celebrating his victory over Canelo Álvarez.
Crawford, known as a hero in Omaha, was ticketed for reckless driving. Additionally, a member of Crawford’s security team was found to be carrying a legal firearm, though all occupants of the vehicle were legally permitted to carry guns. A police supervisor and lieutenant were called to the scene after Crawford made the request.
The situation was described as terrifying by Qasim Shabazz, head of Crawford’s security team, who feared for their lives. Shabazz shared his distress, recounting how the encounter felt like a nightmare, especially given the life-threatening nature of the situation. He also mentioned Crawford’s recent family milestones, including the birth of a child, which added to the emotional weight of the incident.
Following the traffic stop, Omaha’s police chief, Todd Schmaderer, ordered an internal investigation into the matter. Omaha Mayor John Ewing also expressed support for the investigation and emphasized the importance of building trust between law enforcement and the community. In a Facebook post, Ewing acknowledged the serious nature of the event and pledged to ensure full transparency during the inquiry.
This unfortunate incident marred what was otherwise a celebratory day for Crawford, whose recent victory against Álvarez made him the first male boxer to capture three unified division titles. Crawford, with an undefeated record of 42-0, has become a symbol of success in his hometown, where he runs a nonprofit boxing academy dedicated to helping at-risk youth. Despite the police encounter, the mayor urged Omaha residents to remember the day’s positive moments while the investigation continues.
