Kenyan marathoner Geoffrey Kipchumba Toroitich claimed victory at the 50th TCS Amsterdam Marathon on October 19, 2025, setting a new course record of 2:03:30 in just his second marathon. Toroitich’s win marked a remarkable performance, securing the fourth-fastest marathon time of 2025.
The race saw a close battle at the top with defending champion Tsegaye Getachew from Ethiopia finishing in second place with a time of 2:04:18. He was narrowly followed by his compatriot Getaneh Molla, who finished just a second behind. Tanzania’s Gabriel Geay secured the fourth spot with a time of 2:04:36, while Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei set a new personal best of 2:04:52, placing fifth.
In the women’s race, Ethiopia dominated with Aynalem Desta crossing the finish line in 2:17:37 to take first place. Bertukan Welde came in second with a time of 2:17:56, while Mekides Shimeles rounded out the top three with a time of 2:19:56.
Kenya continued its dominance in the marathon circuit with stellar performances in other international events. At the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon, Leonard Langat led a Kenyan sweep of the men’s podium with a victory in 2:08:04. He was followed by Noah Kipkemboi (2:08:28) and Sila Kiptoo (2:08:44). In the women’s category, Ethiopia’s Shure Demise clinched her third Toronto title with a time of 2:21:03, just 20 seconds shy of the course record. Kenya’s Betty Chepkorir came second in 2:23:45.
The Kenyan dominance extended to Italy, where Simon Maiywa won the Rome Half Marathon in 59:44, edging out Vincent Kimaiyo (59:45) and Kalipus Lomwai (59:56) for a clean sweep of the men’s podium. Regina Koech led a Kenyan sweep in the women’s race with a time of 1:08:26, followed by Millicent Jelimo (1:08:37) and Gladys Cherop (1:09:22).
Further victories came in Japan, where Rebecca Mwangi won the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon in 1:08:46, followed by Janet Nyiva in second place. Meanwhile, Purity Kajuju Gitonga secured the top spot in the Bilbao Night Half Marathon in Spain with a time of 1:10:45.
