England head coach Thomas Tuchel has called on his players and fans to embrace an underdog mentality as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup. Tuchel believes the national team will be stronger if they approach the tournament with humility and focus rather than burdening themselves with excessive expectations.
The German coach dismissed suggestions that England should be regarded among the main favourites, arguing that nations such as Brazil, Argentina, France, and Spain currently hold that distinction. He emphasised that England’s priority should be to qualify first and then build momentum step by step once in the tournament.
Tuchel said England’s lack of a World Cup title since 1966 is a reminder to stay grounded. “We want to go all the way, but the role has to be clear,” he said, stressing that being realistic about their position would help them perform with less pressure. He added that England’s progress must come from teamwork and consistency rather than hype.
Responding to claims that pundits and bookmakers often label England as favourites, Tuchel insisted that public opinion cannot influence his approach. “We will arrive with a clear target to win, but there is a way to do it,” he said, highlighting that the journey matters as much as the outcome.
Tuchel noted a shift in public attitude after England’s dominant 5-0 victory over Serbia last month. He said he could sense growing optimism from supporters who appreciated the team’s style of play, contrasting it with earlier skepticism about his methods.
The England boss also referenced Steven Gerrard’s recent comments on the “Golden Generation,” agreeing that past squads failed to achieve success due to internal rivalries. Tuchel warned that talent alone is not enough and reiterated his belief in building a unified squad.
With Harry Kane sidelined due to a minor foot injury, Declan Rice, Jordan Henderson, and John Stones are being considered for the captaincy in the upcoming friendly against Wales. Tuchel confirmed that Kane is expected to return for the World Cup qualifier against Latvia. He also revealed that Jarell Quansah is nursing a minor knee issue.
Tuchel concluded that his focus is on creating a cohesive team built on mutual respect, discipline, and shared ambition—values he believes can take England far in 2026.
