Two suspects have been arrested in connection with a violent robbery incident in Kisauni that left one man dead and a family in shock.
The duo, aged 35 and 27, are believed to have been part of a five-member gang that staged a midnight raid at a home in Majaoni, Kisauni. According to investigators, the assailants stormed the homestead under the cover of darkness and shot the man of the house in the ribs before making away with stolen property.
Among the items reported missing were a 75-inch television, two mobile phones, and other household valuables. The injured victim was rushed to Coast General Hospital, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, detectives launched a manhunt that relied on forensic intelligence. One of the suspects was tracked down to Kinango, where he was found in possession of one of the stolen mobile phones. The second suspect was later cornered and arrested in Mombasa town. Both are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned in court as investigations continue. Authorities have maintained that the search for the three remaining suspects is still ongoing.
The case has once again highlighted the growing insecurity concerns in Mombasa, where criminal gangs continue to thrive. Security experts have long warned that the county’s status as a tourism hub has attracted individuals from different regions, some of whom influence local youth into criminal activity.
Many of these gangs reportedly recruit young people, luring them into petty theft before introducing them to more violent crimes. Drug abuse has also been identified as a major contributing factor to rising insecurity. While crackdowns have reduced hard drug trafficking in recent years, abuse of prescription and over-the-counter medication has become widespread, pushing some youths into crime as a means of survival.
Experts have called on political, community, and religious leaders to step up efforts in addressing the root causes of crime. Programs aimed at engaging young people in sports, skills training, and other recreational activities have been cited as effective alternatives. Initiatives such as pool tournaments in Nyali have already been launched to provide the youth with safe spaces away from drugs and crime.
Authorities continue to urge residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely information that can help dismantle criminal networks and restore safety in the region.
