Gor Mahia midfielder Austin Odhiambo is enjoying a remarkable run with Harambee Stars at CHAN 2024, drawing praise from fans and family alike including his brother, Tyson Otieno. Otieno, recently released by Kenya Police FC after helping them secure their first-ever FKF Premier League title, has spoken with deep admiration for Austin’s growing influence in both club and national team football.
The two brothers, who honed their skills on the gritty Baba Dogo grounds in Nairobi, have seen their careers take different paths but the shared journey has created a special bond. Tyson expressed heartfelt pride, noting that he has watched Austin rise through the ranks to become one of the country’s most exciting midfield talents.
“I thank God his career peaked,” Tyson said, adding that although he doesn’t often express it to his brother directly, he is extremely proud of his progress. “He’s serious about his career, and it’s taking him far. He’s even a role model to young players around here.”
Tyson also highlighted Austin’s grounded personality, saying that despite his growing fame, the Gor Mahia star continues to interact and inspire youth in their community. “He hasn’t put himself above society. He even jokes around and argues with the little boys in the neighborhood they learn a lot from him.”
Austin’s football journey began with a breakthrough moment during the KPL U-20 tournament at Camp Toyoyo in 2016, after being scouted by AFC Cubs coach Boniface Ambani. Though he faced early struggles breaking into AFC Leopards’ senior team, his perseverance paid off in 2019, leading to a national team call-up. A move to Gor Mahia in 2021 marked the next big step in his career, where he replaced Kenneth Muguna and eventually flourished.
In the 2023–24 season, Austin’s outstanding form earned him the Most Valuable Player award at the FKF Gala. Known for his vision, dribbling, and quick decision-making, he made his senior international debut in 2024 and scored during the COSAFA Cup, cementing his spot in the national squad.
As Harambee Stars pursue CHAN 2024 glory, Austin Odhiambo’s story reflects more than personal success it symbolizes the dreams of many young Kenyan footballers, proving that with talent and determination, greatness is within reach.
