George Russell delivered a superb performance to claim pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix, beating world champion Max Verstappen by 0.182 seconds in a dramatic qualifying session. The Mercedes driver, who has been in talks to extend his contract, showcased precision and composure to secure the top spot under the floodlights at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
Verstappen, who had to settle for second place, was left frustrated after feeling his flying lap was compromised by Lando Norris. The Dutchman accused the McLaren driver of impeding him on his final attempt, claiming he lost valuable downforce as he approached the final corners. Although Norris was not found to have breached any regulations, Verstappen was unimpressed and suggested the incident would be remembered. Norris dismissed the criticism, insisting he was far enough ahead and accused Red Bull of overreacting.
Despite the controversy, Russell’s performance was the story of the session. His first Q3 run was already quick enough to challenge for pole, even after brushing the wall. On his second attempt, he improved further, setting a benchmark that none of his rivals could match. Mercedes’ latest upgrades, particularly to the front wing, appeared to make a significant difference, giving Russell renewed confidence behind the wheel.
The result comes at a crucial time for the 27-year-old Briton, whose contract with Mercedes expires at the end of the season. This pole, achieved while still recovering from illness, strengthens his position as negotiations continue. He will now aim to convert it into victory on Sunday, which would be his first at the Singapore circuit.
Behind the top two, Oscar Piastri impressed with third place, while Kimi Antonelli continued his strong form by taking fourth for Mercedes. Norris qualified fifth, admitting McLaren lacked outright pace to challenge for pole. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc lined up sixth and seventh, with both Ferrari drivers struggling to match the front-runners.
Both Williams cars were disqualified after their DRS slots were found to have opened beyond permitted parameters, meaning Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz will start from the back. With McLaren on the verge of clinching the constructors’ title, and Verstappen chasing down Piastri’s 69-point lead, Sunday’s race promises to be an intense showdown under the Singapore lights.
