Tottenham secured a valuable away point in the Champions League after a resilient defensive display earned them a 0-0 draw against Monaco at Stade Louis II. While the result may not inspire excitement, it showcased Spurs’ growing ability to grind out results in difficult European fixtures.
The night belonged to goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who produced a series of vital saves to deny an ambitious Monaco side. The Italian shot-stopper was in inspired form, thwarting Folarin Balogun on several occasions and keeping out dangerous efforts from Maghnes Akliouche and Aleksandr Golovin. Tottenham, despite being short on creativity, managed to hold firm and preserve their unbeaten start to the group stage.
Monaco began with confidence, exploiting space down both flanks through Kassoum Ouattara and Krepin Diatta. Akliouche and Balogun were constant threats, combining fluidly to test the Spurs defence. Archie Gray, starting as a makeshift left-back, made a crucial early block, while Vicario denied Balogun with sharp reflexes at his near post.
Tottenham’s main attacking outlet was Wilson Odobert, whose bursts down the left flank occasionally troubled the hosts. His delivery created one of Spurs’ few clear chances, with Micky van de Ven heading narrowly over. However, Thomas Frank’s men rarely sustained attacking pressure, often losing possession too easily in midfield.
After the break, Monaco continued to push forward. Akliouche drew another strong save from Vicario, while substitute Golovin saw his powerful strike parried away. Thilo Kehrer then came close with a glancing header before Jordan Teze was denied by yet another remarkable Vicario stop.
Spurs briefly threatened through Odobert and Pedro Porro, but their attacking rhythm never truly clicked. Brennan Johnson’s late effort was blocked as Tottenham settled for containment rather than adventure.
Monaco had the game’s best chance in the closing stages when Takumi Minamino, unmarked inside the six-yard box, volleyed over with the goal at his mercy. Despite their dominance, the hosts were left frustrated by Vicario’s heroics and their own wastefulness in front of goal.
For Tottenham, it was far from glamorous, but a hard-earned point on the Côte d’Azur keeps their knockout hopes alive.
