Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has credited teamwork, belief, and collective growth as the driving forces behind his team’s impressive four-game unbeaten run in the FKF Premier League. The defending champions continued their strong form with a 2-0 win over Mathare United at Kasarani Stadium, extending their unbeaten streak after losing their opening fixture to Bidco United.
The match showcased Gor Mahia’s composure and tactical discipline as they overcame a stubborn Mathare side. Shariff Musa broke the deadlock early in the second half before Bryson Wangai sealed the victory deep into stoppage time. The result lifted Gor Mahia’s tally to 12 points from a possible 15, underlining their determination to retain the league title.
Reflecting on the performance, Akonnor expressed pride in his players’ consistency and commitment to improvement, emphasizing the importance of unity and shared progress within the squad.
“The boys are doing well. They’re processing exactly what we’re asking of them, and they believe in themselves,” he said. “We’re all growing together — as coaches, as players, as a team. Every game is a chance to learn and improve, and the players have really embraced that. They trust the process, and it’s showing on the pitch.”
The Ghanaian tactician pointed out that patience and tactical awareness were key to breaking down Mathare’s defensive setup, especially after a goalless first half. “We knew Mathare like to keep possession and play patiently, so we had to stay disciplined and wait for our moments,” he explained. “When they switched to a back three, we took advantage of the spaces on the wings, and that’s how our first goal came.”
Akonnor also praised his squad depth and the harmony within the team, noting that every player understands their role, even those who start on the bench. “Everyone is involved in our system. When substitutions are made, we know the replacements can deliver because they understand what’s expected of them,” he added.
Despite their strong form, Akonnor stressed the importance of humility and continued improvement. “We’re not perfect yet — football is about constant learning. What matters is that we’re learning together. The players are improving every game, and we as the technical team are growing with them.”
Gor Mahia’s victory keeps them firmly in the title race as they aim for another record-breaking season.
