Gor Mahia midfielder Austin Odhiambo has candidly admitted that the team has not lived up to expectations this season, with their upcoming FKF Cup final against Nairobi United now standing as their last chance to redeem themselves. After missing out on the FKF Premier League title to Kenya Police and suffering an early exit from the CAF Champions League, the domestic cup remains Gor Mahia’s sole shot at silverware this season.
Ahead of the decisive clash, Odhiambo acknowledged the pain their loyal supporters have endured and promised that the team is ready to give everything to end the season on a high. “The game is big for our club especially given this is our only hope,” he said, describing the final as a moment of redemption.
Gor Mahia’s standards have historically been high, with their name synonymous with success in Kenyan football. However, this season has been anything but typical. Odhiambo admitted the players feel the weight of expectation, not only from fans but from the club’s legacy. “Our fans are used to us being champions. The name itself is a champion. As players, we have to show the mentality of winners because we have really let the fans down this season.”
For Odhiambo, this final is more than a match it’s a chance to make things right. “I feel that is an opportunity God has given us,” he said with conviction, signaling the determination within the squad to bring home a trophy.
Club captain Philemon Otieno also stressed the significance of the fixture, emphasizing that the players know what’s at stake. “It means a lot to us and it is an important game because it is our last hope for this season. We have to make sure we give a good fight and get positive results.”
Otieno cautioned against underestimating Nairobi United, who have made a remarkable run to the final by knocking out several top-flight teams. “We must approach this game with the seriousness it deserves,” he said, adding that early dominance could be key to managing pressure.
Victory in the FKF Cup would not only end their season with silverware but also guarantee Gor Mahia a spot in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup. As Odhiambo put it, “We have to play continental football for our fans. We’ve decided as players—we have to win it.”
