Gor Mahia midfielder Austin Odhiambo has issued a heartfelt rallying cry ahead of their FKF Cup final clash against Nairobi United, acknowledging that the club owes its fans a strong finish after a season filled with disappointment.
Having missed out on the FKF Premier League title to Kenya Police and suffering an early exit from the CAF Champions League, the FKF Cup final now represents Gor Mahia’s last chance to end the season on a high. Odhiambo, speaking candidly ahead of the decisive encounter, admitted that the team has fallen short of expectations and must rise to the occasion.
“This game is massive for the club. It’s our only hope left to give our fans something to smile about,” Odhiambo said. “We’ve gone through a tough season, and this is the only game that can give the fans pride after enduring so much.”
The midfielder emphasized the winning legacy of the club, noting that Gor Mahia’s identity is synonymous with success. He stressed that the players must embody the mentality of champions and deliver a performance worthy of the badge.
“Our fans are used to seeing us win. The name Gor Mahia means being a champion,” he added. “As players, we must adopt that mentality. We’ve let our fans down this season and this is the chance to make it right.”
Club captain Philemon Otieno echoed Odhiambo’s sentiments, highlighting the significance of the match as their final shot at glory this season. He acknowledged the strength of opponents Nairobi United, who have stunned several top-flight teams to reach the final, and warned against underestimating them.
“It’s a very important game for us. It’s our last opportunity and we must give it everything,” Otieno stated. “We respect Nairobi United for what they’ve achieved, but we must approach the final with focus and determination.”
Otieno also called on his teammates to get the job done early and avoid a late-game scramble.
“We must aim to finish the match early and take control,” he said. “We’re ready and we understand the weight of this moment.”
Victory in the FKF Cup final would not only restore pride for the record Kenyan champions but also secure a return to continental football via qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup a target both players and fans view as essential.
