Manchester United kicked off their new Premier League campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Old Trafford, but manager Ruben Amorim struck a defiant tone after the final whistle, insisting his side showed promise despite an unwanted record.
The only goal of the match came when Riccardo Calafiori pounced on a loose ball following a dangerous inswinging corner from Declan Rice, leaving United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir exposed. Despite falling behind, United responded strongly, with Patrick Dorgu striking the post and Matheus Cunha forcing David Raya into several saves.
Amorim praised his team’s approach, highlighting their aggression and improved intensity compared to last season. “We showed today that we can win any game in the Premier League, especially against a big team like Arsenal,” he said. “We were more aggressive, we sprinted more, and most importantly, we were not boring.”
However, the result also underlined the Portuguese coach’s difficult start in England. The defeat marked his 15th Premier League loss in just 28 matches, making him the fastest non-promoted manager to reach that total since 2009. United’s struggles last season, which ended with a 15th-place finish, appear to be continuing, despite new signings and a refreshed squad.
Goalkeeping remains a pressing concern. With Andre Onana sidelined, Bayindir was handed a start but failed to convince, misjudging the corner that led to Arsenal’s decisive goal. United are expected to move for a new shot-stopper, with big names already being linked.
In attack, frustrations persisted. Big-money summer signing Benjamin Sesko remained on the bench until the 65th minute, despite United swinging in several crosses that suited his profile. Bryan Mbeumo and Cunha added energy and movement, but the team once again failed to find the net echoing last season’s issues, when they scored just 44 goals in 38 league games.
Despite the setback, Amorim insisted his team had taken a step forward in terms of mentality and performance. United fans may remain cautious, but there was at least a sense of greater urgency and attacking intent. For now, the Red Devils are left with questions over consistency, finishing, and defensive stability as they look to avoid slipping into another disappointing campaign.
