Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has exuded confidence in his team’s readiness ahead of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), declaring that Kenya will soon have a side that no opponent will want to face. The former South African international believes his players are nearing peak condition and will be a formidable force when the tournament kicks off.
Kenya is set to co-host the CHAN 2024 tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania. However, the Stars face a daunting challenge in what many have dubbed the ‘Group of Death,’ featuring tournament heavyweights Morocco and DR Congo both of whom are two-time champions alongside Angola and Zambia. Despite the tough draw, McCarthy has issued a bold warning to Kenya’s opponents, stating that his squad is gearing up to defy the odds.
According to the coach, the national team’s preparations have been intense and focused, with the players showing exceptional commitment and energy during training sessions held at Kasarani Annex. He stressed that the tactical and technical progress being made is encouraging and that within three weeks, Kenya will have a side that can compete with the best.
McCarthy attributed the squad’s sharpness to the recently concluded local league, which has helped maintain players’ match fitness. He emphasized that the focus has now shifted to fine-tuning tactical awareness and building on-field chemistry. With physical conditioning already in place, the coaching staff is concentrating on aligning the squad with McCarthy’s preferred playing style and game strategy.
The coach also dismissed criticism over his squad selection, reiterating that he has full confidence in the players chosen for the tournament. He believes the blend of experience and youth in the team will be key in navigating the difficult group stages and potentially mounting a deep run in the competition.
The Harambee Stars are determined to make a strong impression, especially as co-hosts. McCarthy is counting on the unwavering support of local fans to inspire the team. With just weeks remaining before the tournament begins on August 2, the focus remains on preparation, unity, and belief three key ingredients the coach insists will make Kenya a team to watch in CHAN 2024.
