When William Lenkupae first pulled on the Harambee Stars jersey in 2023 against Gambia, it was a landmark moment. Not only did the Austria-born midfielder mark his debut with a goal in a thrilling 3-3 draw, but it also happened to be the first game in charge for new head coach Benni McCarthy. Since then, the 23-year-old has been a regular feature in the national team setup, and McCarthy has made it clear he sees Lenkupae as central to his long-term vision.
Lenkupae has already earned six caps for Kenya, producing moments of flair but also facing criticism for inconsistency. He impressed during Kenya’s emphatic 5-0 win over Seychelles but drew scrutiny for quieter outings, such as the home fixture against Gambia. Despite the mixed reviews, McCarthy insists that the midfielder’s influence goes beyond statistics.
The coach highlights Lenkupae’s mentality and work ethic as qualities that make him invaluable. “It’s not just about talent—talent alone is never enough. What sets Will apart is his relentlessness, his willingness to play in any position, and the example he sets for others with his attitude.”
Born to a Kenyan father and Austrian mother, Lenkupae grew up in Australia, where he started his career with Box Hill United before joining Melbourne Victory. He made his professional debut in the FFA Cup in 2021 and later played in the A-League. A spell with Central Coast Mariners followed before he moved to Europe in 2025, signing with Finnish side Vaasan Palloseura (VPS). His current market value is estimated at €150,000, reflecting his growing profile.
For McCarthy, Lenkupae’s cultural integration has also been significant. He is embracing Kenyan identity, learning Swahili, and fully committing to the national setup. The coach is adamant: “As long as I am here, he has a future. He represents the fighting spirit and adaptability we want in this team.”
At just 23, time is firmly on Lenkupae’s side. With his blend of energy, versatility, and commitment, McCarthy sees him as a cornerstone in building a Harambee Stars side capable of competing at the highest level in African football.
