Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has issued a strong reminder to his squad about the need for full commitment ahead of a congested run of fixtures and the imminent return of Jude Bellingham.
The Spanish coach expressed relief that all 13 of his players returned safely from international duty and immediately turned focus to the upcoming La Liga clash against Real Sociedad. The fixture at Anoeta marks the first of seven matches in just 22 days, a stretch that will test both fitness and squad depth.
Alonso emphasized that competition within the team is not only unavoidable but also necessary. With Dani Carvajal and Trent Alexander-Arnold both vying for the right-back spot, he dismissed suggestions of friction, underlining that healthy rivalry fuels better performances. He insisted that selection will always be based on merit, sending a clear message to the squad: “Whoever deserves to play, will play.”
The manager also hinted at tactical flexibility, suggesting he could deploy a back three to maximize the attacking talents of Rodrygo, Vinícius Júnior, and Kylian Mbappé together. He praised Mbappé’s form at the start of the season, highlighting not just his three goals in as many matches, but also his growing leadership role within the dressing room. According to Alonso, the Frenchman is fundamental to building the collective spirit Madrid envisions this season.
On the injury front, Jude Bellingham’s recovery is progressing faster than anticipated. The 22-year-old midfielder underwent shoulder surgery in July after struggling with chronic pain for nearly two years. The issue dated back to a clash with Rayo Vallecano in November 2023, but Bellingham had delayed surgery to complete his first season in Madrid and take part in Euro 2024. Throughout that period, he managed the condition using kinesiology tape to stabilize his shoulder.
Now, after finally addressing the root cause, the midfielder has begun partial training with the group and is expected to return before October. Alonso confirmed that Bellingham would not be available for the trip to San Sebastián but expressed optimism that he will be back in full training next week.
As Real Madrid enter a demanding phase of the season, Alonso’s warning serves as both a challenge and a motivation. With competition for places fierce and stars like Mbappé firing, the return of Bellingham could add yet another dimension to a squad already stacked with talent.
