A total of 160 young people in Nyamira County have completed a transformative four-week digital skills training program designed to prepare them for opportunities in the technology-driven world.
The training was delivered through the innovative solar-powered DigiTruck, a mobile digital classroom that provides practical, hands-on learning in essential areas such as basic computer skills, internet navigation, online job searching, CV writing, and digital marketing. The program aimed to bridge the rural-urban digital divide, which remains a significant challenge in Kenya.
According to recent data, only 38% of rural youth in Kenya have basic ICT skills compared to 67% in urban areas. This skills gap limits access to digital opportunities, especially as over 60% of jobs by 2030 will require advanced digital and cognitive skills. The DigiTruck program seeks to address this imbalance by equipping rural youth with the competencies needed to participate fully in the modern economy.
In addition to technical training, the initiative emphasized online safety, entrepreneurship, and the importance of leveraging digital tools for economic empowerment. By integrating both theoretical and practical components, participants gained skills to enhance employability, start small businesses, or tap into online income streams such as freelancing and e-commerce.
The graduation ceremony marked not just the completion of the program but also celebrated the resilience and determination of Nyamira’s youth. Graduates received certificates recognizing their skills, boosting their confidence as they step into new professional and entrepreneurial ventures.
Since its inception, the DigiTruck has made a significant impact in rural Kenya, having trained over 9,000 young people across 39 counties. In 2025 alone, more than 900 youth have benefited from similar training sessions in Kisii, Baringo, Migori, Homa Bay, and now Nyamira. Previous sessions recorded high participation, including 210 graduates in Migori and 290 in Homa Bay.
The program also features an innovation competition, encouraging trainees to develop creative, practical solutions to address challenges within their communities. This element fosters critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities—skills crucial for future-ready citizens.
As the DigiTruck continues its journey across the country, it remains a beacon of opportunity, empowering young people to not only adapt to the digital age but to lead in shaping Kenya’s tech-enabled future.
