China’s lithium-ion battery industry is experiencing a remarkable surge, with official data revealing a 68% year-on-year increase in output during the first four months of 2025. According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), total production from January to April surpassed 473 gigawatt-hours (GWh), underscoring the country’s accelerating push toward clean energy and sustainable development.
The report highlights a strong performance across various segments of the battery industry. Power storage batteries crucial for renewable energy integration and grid stability accounted for over 110 GWh of the total output. Meanwhile, lithium-ion power batteries installed in new energy vehicles (NEVs) reached approximately 184 GWh, reflecting China’s continued leadership in electric vehicle (EV) adoption and manufacturing.
On the global front, China’s lithium-ion battery exports also witnessed a significant boost. From January to April, the export value climbed to 155.4 billion yuan (around 21.7 billion U.S. dollars), marking a 25% year-on-year growth. This surge in exports not only reinforces China’s dominance in the global battery supply chain but also demonstrates rising international demand for high-capacity, efficient energy storage solutions.
The lithium-ion battery industry is playing an increasingly vital role in China’s green transformation. As the country works toward its dual carbon goals—peaking carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060—lithium-ion technology is at the heart of its strategy. From powering electric vehicles to storing energy from wind and solar farms, these batteries are critical to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing energy resilience.
The government’s continued support for technological innovation, industrial upgrades, and international cooperation in the battery sector is expected to further accelerate growth.
