As OpenAI’s Sora 2 video generation tool continues gaining attention, cybersecurity experts are warning users about a wave of imposter apps appearing on the Apple App Store and lesser-known Android marketplaces. These unauthorized applications mimic Sora 2’s branding, promising advanced video creation features but often delivering non-functional or malicious content.
“Scammers are exploiting the hype around Sora 2. Many of these apps request unnecessary permissions or redirect users to phishing sites,” said a cybersecurity analyst at Check Point Research.

Impersonators Exploit OpenAI Branding
Fake apps are using keywords like “Sora 2 AI,” “Sora Video Maker,” and “OpenAI Sora Tool” to appear legitimate. Some even deploy AI-generated promotional videos to further convince users.
OpenAI has not released an official mobile version of Sora 2, which is currently accessible only through web-based platforms for professional users, creating a loophole that malicious developers are exploiting.
“If an app claims to be ‘Sora 2 mobile’ or asks for payment to unlock features, it’s fake,” OpenAI warned on its official social media account.
Privacy and Subscription Risks
Experts caution that these impostor apps may:
- Harvest personal data such as contacts, location, and device IDs
- Redirect users to phishing websites
- Impose hidden subscription fees or charge for nonexistent features
Mobile threat researchers report that the number of Sora-related fake apps has tripled within two weeks, echoing scams that appeared during the launches of ChatGPT and DALL·E.
“The pattern is the same: AI goes viral, and scam apps follow within days,” said cybersecurity consultant Maria Vance.
How Users Can Protect Themselves
To stay safe, experts recommend:
- Verify apps against OpenAI’s official website or publisher details in app stores
- Avoid granting excessive permissions to unknown apps
- Report suspicious listings immediately to Apple or Google
OpenAI is actively working with app stores to remove fraudulent apps and may launch an official mobile companion app in the future to reduce confusion.
