Microsoft, in collaboration with Asus, has launched two exciting new Windows-powered gaming handhelds: the ROG Xbox Ally and the more performance-focused ROG Xbox Ally X. These devices promise an immersive Xbox full-screen experience optimized specifically for handheld gaming, marking a new era for portable Windows gaming.
Both handhelds are powered by cutting-edge AMD processors tailored for gaming. The standard ROG Xbox Ally features the AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, while the ROG Xbox Ally X packs the advanced AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip, designed for higher performance and AI-enhanced gaming capabilities.
The handhelds sport vibrant 7-inch Full HD LCD screens with a 120Hz refresh rate and 500 nits brightness, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus for durability. An anti-reflective coating and AMD Freesync Premium technology further enhance the visual experience by reducing glare and minimizing screen tearing during intense gameplay.
Asus has redesigned the chassis for better ergonomics, including an improved grip, reworked palm rests, and new texturing patterns to keep gamers comfortable for long sessions. The button layout remains familiar to fans of previous Asus handhelds, but with some differences in trigger technology: the ROG Xbox Ally X boasts hall effect triggers, while the ROG Xbox Ally includes impulse triggers for enhanced haptics in supported games.
Memory and storage also differ between the two models. The ROG Xbox Ally comes with 16GB RAM and 512GB internal storage, supported by a 60Wh battery. Meanwhile, the ROG Xbox Ally X steps it up with up to 25GB RAM, 1TB storage, and an 80Wh battery for longer playtime.
Users will be greeted with a customized Xbox full-screen interface instead of the traditional Windows desktop, minimizing performance overhead and boosting speed. However, switching back to the classic Windows interface is always an option. Microsoft is also integrating AI-powered Gaming Copilot into the Game Bar to help gamers improve skills and socialize.
The ROG Xbox Ally handhelds will launch this holiday season in numerous countries, including the US, UK, Australia, Japan, Germany, and more. Pricing details remain under wraps, but these devices mark a strong entry into the growing market for powerful, portable Windows gaming handhelds.
