Amid ongoing layoffs at Microsoft’s gaming division, an Xbox executive stirred debate by recommending that affected employees seek guidance and emotional support from AI tools like ChatGPT.
Matt Turnbull, an executive producer at Xbox Game Studios, made the suggestion in a now-deleted LinkedIn post. “No AI tool is a replacement for your voice or your lived experience. But at a time when mental energy is scarce, these tools can help get you unstuck faster, calmer, and with more clarity,” he wrote.
Turnbull’s comments came after Microsoft confirmed sweeping job cuts across several of its gaming studios, part of a broader restructuring within the tech giant. The layoffs have hit teams working on prominent projects, leaving many in the gaming community disheartened and uncertain about the future.
While some interpreted Turnbull’s advice as an attempt to offer a helpful resource during a difficult time, others criticized the post as tone-deaf. Critics argue that suggesting AI tools as a substitute for professional career counseling or mental health support undermines the seriousness of losing a job.
The suggestion also highlights a growing trend: as artificial intelligence becomes more accessible, individuals are increasingly turning to tools like ChatGPT for everything from résumé writing to emotional support. However, experts warn that AI cannot fully replace human interaction, especially when it comes to mental health and career decisions. There are concerns about the accuracy, empathy, and safety of relying on AI in sensitive situations.
“ChatGPT can be helpful for brainstorming or practicing interview questions,” says Dr. Rachel Morgan, a workplace psychologist. “But it should not be seen as a replacement for a qualified therapist or career coach, especially for someone going through job loss trauma.”
Turnbull has since removed the post, possibly in response to the backlash. Microsoft has not issued an official statement regarding his comments. The incident reflects the delicate balance tech leaders must strike between embracing innovation and showing empathy toward their workforce — particularly in times of upheaval.
As the tech industry continues to face job cuts, the role of AI in offering support remains both promising and controversial.
