Netflix is discontinuing support for first-generation Amazon Fire TV Sticks, officially cutting off streaming access for users of the decade-old device starting June 3, 2025. The move affects a small but notable group of users still relying on the original streaming hardware introduced by Amazon over 10 years ago.
The decision was first reported by ZDNet, which noted that Netflix has begun emailing affected customers to notify them of the change. The emails confirm that users will no longer be able to access Netflix on these older Fire TV devices after the cutoff date. Although Netflix has not publicly explained the exact reason for the discontinuation, it’s widely believed that the aging hardware is no longer capable of meeting the platform’s streaming quality and security standards.
In a statement to The Verge, Amazon spokesperson Jen Lurey Ridings said, “Netflix will be discontinuing support for some first-generation Fire TV devices, which were introduced more than 10 years ago. Netflix remains available on all other Fire TV devices.”
The affected Fire TV Stick models were among the earliest to support Netflix and other streaming services, but their limited processing power and lack of modern software updates have made them less compatible with current streaming demands. As video quality standards have increased, particularly with the rise of 4K, HDR, and Dolby Atmos content, older devices have struggled to keep up.
For users still using the first-generation Fire TV Stick, this means upgrading to a newer model is the only way to continue accessing Netflix on the platform. Fortunately, Netflix remains fully operational on all newer Fire TV devices, including the Fire TV Stick 4K, Fire TV Cube, and the latest Fire TV smart televisions.
This change reflects a broader trend in the tech industry, where older hardware eventually falls out of support as software and content delivery standards evolve. Users impacted by the discontinuation should consider replacing their outdated device to maintain uninterrupted access to Netflix’s vast content library.
