Nissan is accelerating its journey toward autonomous driving through a new collaboration with British AI startup Wayve. The partnership focuses on testing a Level 2 advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) in Nissan’s Ariya electric vehicles, blending the automaker’s engineering expertise with Wayve’s cutting-edge AI technology.
Next-Level Driver Assistance
The system allows the vehicle to manage steering, acceleration, and braking under specific conditions while keeping the driver engaged. A key feature is collision avoidance tailored for complex urban environments, addressing the challenges posed by pedestrians, cyclists, and unpredictable traffic patterns.
AI-Powered Sensor Suite
To enable this capability, the Ariya test fleet is equipped with 11 cameras, five radars, and a lidar unit, creating a 360-degree view of the surroundings. Real-time data is fed into Wayve’s machine-learning algorithms, which continuously improve safety and adaptability in diverse driving conditions.
Roadmap and Market Launch
Nissan plans to launch the system in the Japanese market during the 2027 fiscal year. If successful, it will mark a significant step toward more advanced autonomous driving technologies and set the foundation for potential global rollouts.
