OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, is reportedly developing a new feature that could transform how users log into third-party services. The new functionality, dubbed “Sign in with ChatGPT,” aims to let users use their existing ChatGPT accounts to sign into other apps and platforms seamlessly.
This move marks OpenAI’s entry into the identity and authentication space, where tech giants like Google, Facebook, and Apple have long provided similar “single sign-on” services. By allowing users to authenticate with their ChatGPT credentials, OpenAI hopes to extend its ecosystem beyond AI interactions, potentially opening doors into sectors such as online shopping, social media, and more.
The feature was first previewed a few weeks ago to developers working on Codex CLI, an open-source AI coding tool that runs on terminals. This initial rollout demonstrated how users of ChatGPT’s Free, Plus, and Pro subscription tiers could link their ChatGPT accounts to API accounts through third-party apps. To incentivize users, OpenAI offered API credits — $5 for Plus users and $50 for Pro users — encouraging developers and users to test the new integration.
OpenAI’s interest in expanding account integration aligns with its rapid growth. According to Google data revealed in recent court documents, ChatGPT attracted around 600 million monthly active users last month, making it one of the most widely used consumer applications worldwide. With such a large user base, the company is well-positioned to push its identity platform as a convenient, secure, and trusted way to sign in across the internet.
Beyond authentication, OpenAI has been exploring other ambitious projects, including venturing into hardware collaborations with Apple’s famed iPhone designer Jony Ive, as well as extending its AI capabilities into shopping and social media realms.
If successful, “Sign in with ChatGPT” could become a significant new pillar in OpenAI’s ecosystem, simplifying user experiences and reinforcing its growing presence in everyday digital life. Developers interested in integrating this feature are already being invited to participate, signaling that OpenAI is serious about building a broad, connected platform powered by AI.
