OpenAI has launched a major update to its flagship chatbot with the release of GPT-5, calling it a significant advancement on the path toward artificial general intelligence (AGI). The latest model brings enhanced capabilities in areas such as software development, creative writing, and task automation.
According to OpenAI, GPT-5 is a considerable leap forward compared to its predecessors. The company describes this version of ChatGPT as equivalent to having a “PhD-level expert in your pocket,” whereas earlier versions were likened to college or high school students. Despite the progress, the technology still falls short of true AGI, as it lacks the ability to learn continuously from real-world interactions a key feature believed to be essential for systems that can perform most economically valuable tasks better than humans.

The model’s tone has also been refined to reduce excessive agreeableness, addressing previous concerns that overly sycophantic responses might cause discomfort or mislead users. GPT-5’s responses are now more balanced, nuanced, and context-aware.
As the race towards AGI intensifies, major tech firms continue investing heavily in advanced AI systems. OpenAI’s GPT-5 stands out as one of the most capable models currently available, with its rollout accessible to hundreds of millions of users globally. While limited access is available to free users, full functionality is offered through premium subscriptions.
