Kenya’s Harambee Stars were forced to settle for a dramatic 1-1 draw against Angola in their second CHAN 2024 match at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani. In a match dominated by end-to-end action, two critical VAR decisions ensured Kenya stayed in the fight after going down to 10 men.
Angola started brightly, and their pressure was rewarded in the seventh minute when Joaquim Paciencia found the net with a sharp finish that left Bryne Omondi helpless. Kenya, however, responded almost immediately. After Austin Odhiambo was brought down in the box during a quick counter, the Gor Mahia midfielder stepped up to convert the penalty and level the score just five minutes later.

The match soon turned physical, and tensions flared. A reckless challenge by Marvin Nabwire, following a defensive lapse by Omondi, earned the midfielder a straight red card after VAR review. Angola capitalised on the numerical advantage and kept pressing, but Omondi made several crucial saves to keep the scores level.
Despite Angola’s control and numerous attempts, Kenya’s defence, reinforced by coach Benni McCarthy’s tactical switch to a back five, held firm. Substitutions in the second half brought renewed energy as McCarthy brought on Chrispine Erambo, Ryan Ogam, Ben Stanley Omondi, and Kevin Okumu in search of more stability and fresh legs.

Angola continued to dominate possession, and in stoppage time thought they had grabbed a winner through Kaporal. However, VAR once again came to Kenya’s rescue, ruling the goal out for offside. The final whistle was met with celebrations from the Kenyan bench, grateful for the crucial point.
This result leaves Harambee Stars on top of their group with four points, following their opening 1-0 win over DR Congo. Austin Odhiambo’s influence remains vital, and Kenya will now prepare for a high-stakes showdown against two-time champions Morocco. With their fighting spirit on display and VAR playing its part, Kenya remains firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages of CHAN 2024.
