WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature called Message Summaries, powered by Meta AI. Officially announced on Wednesday, June 25, the feature provides AI-generated bullet point summaries of unread messages in a chat, offering users a quick overview without having to scroll through an entire thread.
Initially launched in English for users in the United States, the feature is expected to expand to other languages and regions in the near future. WhatsApp showcased the functionality with a short explanatory GIF on its blog, illustrating how users can now catch up on multiple messages at a glance.
Previously, WhatsApp users had to sift through every single unread message to understand the context of an ongoing conversation, especially in active group chats or lengthy discussions. With Message Summaries, this process becomes significantly more efficient. Whether you’ve been offline for hours or returning from a meeting, you’ll now be able to get a personalized digest of key points, saving time and reducing message fatigue.
In its announcement, WhatsApp stated: “We’re excited to introduce Message Summaries, a new option that uses Meta AI to privately and quickly summarise unread messages in a chat, so you can get an idea of what is happening, before reading the details in your unread messages.”
The summaries are tailored for each user, and importantly, they maintain WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption standards, ensuring that user privacy remains intact. The AI works within Meta’s trusted infrastructure and does not compromise the confidentiality of your messages.
The feature is part of WhatsApp’s broader strategy to integrate AI-driven tools to enhance user experience while maintaining privacy. As with other Meta AI integrations, users are expected to have control over how and when summaries are generated.
While currently limited in availability, the potential benefits of this feature are considerable, especially for busy professionals, students, and users active in multiple group chats. As the rollout continues globally, Message Summaries may soon become one of the most practical AI tools within everyday messaging.
