Chinese tech and EV maker Xiaomi has announced a recall affecting more than 115,000 units of its SU7 electric sedan, citing safety concerns with its Level 2 assisted driving system. The fix will be delivered via an over-the-air (OTA) software update, eliminating the need for physical servicing.
Assisted Driving Under Scrutiny
The recall targets the car’s advanced driver-assistance features, which regulators say require improvements in warning systems and performance reliability. Concerns centered on how the system performs under extreme driving conditions, where delayed alerts or insufficient corrective actions could elevate risks. While no major accidents linked to the issue have been reported, the move reflects increasing scrutiny of semi-autonomous driving technologies.
Vehicles Affected
The recall applies to SU7 sedans produced between February 2024 and August 2025. All affected vehicles will automatically receive the OTA update, which improves the software’s ability to detect anomalies and issue clearer, earlier alerts when manual driver intervention is required.
Regulatory Oversight Tightens
China’s automotive regulators have stepped up oversight of assisted driving systems, insisting that human drivers remain alert and in control at all times. The Xiaomi case underscores the regulatory stance that Level 2 systems are not autonomous and must be designed to prioritize driver engagement and safety.
Xiaomi’s Response
Xiaomi pledged full compliance with regulatory requirements, reaffirming its commitment to delivering “the safest possible intelligent driving experience.” The company stressed that OTA updates are a key part of its long-term strategy to continuously enhance EV performance post-sale—a model pioneered by Tesla and adopted by other EV leaders worldwide.
Industry Context
The recall highlights the opportunities and challenges of intelligent driving. As China’s EV sector grows more competitive, safety and compliance are emerging as critical differentiators alongside range, price, and design. For Xiaomi, whose SU7 debut was widely celebrated as a strong entry into the EV market, the recall represents an early test of transparency, regulatory responsiveness, and customer trust.
