The Australian government has issued a heightened travel advisory for its citizens currently in or planning to visit Kenya, citing an increased risk of terrorism. In the advisory released this week, Australians were urged to exercise a high degree of caution while in the East African nation, with the government noting that terrorist attacks could occur without warning, particularly in locations frequented by foreigners and tourists.
The advisory specifically warned travelers to remain vigilant in public areas, including shopping malls, hotels, markets, and places of worship, which are often soft targets for extremist attacks. It also highlighted concerns over public transport and large gatherings, where the risk of attack may be higher.
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) pinpointed the northeastern counties of Garissa, Mandera, and Marsabit as high-risk areas and strongly advised against all travel to these regions. These areas border Somalia and have previously experienced cross-border incursions and attacks linked to the al-Shabaab militant group, which is based in Somalia and has claimed responsibility for numerous terror incidents in Kenya.
“The security situation in Kenya remains volatile, particularly near the border with Somalia,” the advisory stated. “Terrorist groups have demonstrated their capability and intent to target foreign nationals and government infrastructure.”
Australia joins other Western nations such as the United States and the United Kingdom, which have also maintained similar advisories concerning the security risks in Kenya. The latest warning is part of routine assessments made by foreign governments to protect their citizens abroad.
In response to ongoing threats, Kenyan authorities have stepped up security measures across the country, especially in major urban centres like Nairobi and Mombasa. Security forces have also increased patrols near sensitive areas and critical infrastructure.
Despite these measures, the Australian government has emphasized the need for its citizens to remain alert, keep updated through local media, and follow the advice of local authorities.
