Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has lauded road contractors across the country for resuming work on previously stalled infrastructure projects. This development comes in the wake of the government’s move to begin settling long-overdue pending bills owed to the contractors.
Speaking during a meeting with various road agencies, Chirchir highlighted the significance of the renewed construction efforts, noting that they mark a major step forward in strengthening the country’s road network. “This initiative holds significant promise for improving transportation across the country, enabling Kenyans to experience more efficient and seamless connectivity,” he stated.
Several road projects had stalled for over five years due to delayed payments, leaving essential infrastructure incomplete and affecting mobility and economic activities in various regions. The government, through the Ministry of Roads and Transport, has embarked on a phased settlement of these pending bills, some of which date back several years. In 2024, former CS Kipchumba Murkomen disclosed that the ministry had inherited commitments worth Sh900 billion, with at least Sh150 billion in unsettled bills that significantly hampered project progress.
Chirchir praised the collaboration between road agencies and the Ministry, noting that their efforts in facilitating timely payments were crucial to getting contractors back on site. He further emphasized that beyond improving infrastructure, the resumption of road works is poised to stimulate the economy through job creation.
The Cabinet Secretary noted that thousands of Kenyans will benefit from employment opportunities generated directly on construction sites and indirectly through support services. This includes service providers, suppliers, contractors’ employees, and even small-scale traders such as “Mama mboga,” who rely on reliable road networks for market access.
“The revival of these projects is vital not only for connectivity but also for production and economic growth,” he said. Chirchir reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to accelerating project delivery, promising continued support to ensure all ongoing works are completed efficiently and on time.
He concluded by appreciating all stakeholders involved in the recovery of the road construction sector and urged continued collaboration to ensure the country’s infrastructure goals are met.
