Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku on Friday made unannounced visits to the GPO and Eastleigh Huduma Centres in Nairobi, aiming to assess service delivery and directly engage with staff and citizens.
During the visits, CS Ruku praised the dedication and professionalism of frontline workers, acknowledging their efforts despite the challenge of limited resources. “I am impressed by the level of professionalism and output I have witnessed here today. It is encouraging to see public servants doing more with less, showing that they are committed to serving Kenyans,” he stated during a media briefing at Eastleigh Huduma Centre.
The CS underscored the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing efficiency and accountability in the public service. He emphasized that performance must be anchored in merit and integrity, calling on the Public Service Commission (PSC) to adopt transparent and merit-based recruitment and promotion processes.
“I want to emphasize that moving forward, recruitment and promotion in the public service must be merit-based. The era of rewarding incompetence is over,” said Ruku, adding that he would continue making impromptu visits to various government offices to monitor performance and ensure service excellence.
Ruku also echoed President William Ruto’s vision for a responsive and ethical public service. “Public service is not a privilege; it is a responsibility. Every officer must remember they are here to serve Kenyans first,” he declared.
He reiterated the government’s dedication to citizen-centered service delivery through the Huduma Centres, which are crucial contact points for many Kenyans seeking essential government services.
“This initiative is about restoring trust, improving access, and ensuring that the services we deliver are timely, efficient, and people-focused. Huduma Serikalini is not just a slogan, it is our mission,” he affirmed.
Ruku’s surprise visits are part of a broader effort to reinforce accountability and instill a culture of excellence in public institutions, with the ultimate goal of transforming the public sector to better serve citizens.
