A dashcam video circulating online has exposed a reckless motorist driving in the wrong direction on Thika Road, near the Safari Park Hotel, causing a collision and sparking outrage among road users.
According to the footage, the motorist, heading towards the city centre on the wrong side of the highway, disrupted traffic and narrowly avoided a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle. In the chaos, the motorist collided with the back of a Toyota Probox, which had swerved to evade a direct crash, causing a boda boda rider to fall onto the road.
Instead of stopping to assist the injured rider, the motorist sped away, leaving the victim stranded. The Probox driver, who had been forced to react quickly to avoid a head-on collision, was seen inspecting his vehicle’s damage but did not provide help to the fallen rider.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from road safety advocates. Sikika Road Safety condemned the motorist’s actions, calling them “reckless and unacceptable.” The group added: “You cannot use the wrong side of the road on a busy highway like Thika Road, cause an accident, and drive off as if nothing happened. You can run, but you cannot hide.”
Social media reactions to the video have been mixed. While some users placed the blame squarely on the motorist for endangering other road users, others partially faulted the boda boda rider for not maintaining a safe distance or failing to notice the Probox’s hazard lights. Comments ranged from, “Nduthi guy was solely responsible for the accident. He did not keep sufficient braking distance,” to, “Always keep a safe distance and check indicators. Remember, you are the only sane man on the road.”
In a separate but related incident, a Land Rover truck was torched by boda boda riders on Saturday night near the National Youth Service (NYS) along Thika Superhighway, reportedly following an earlier collision with a boda boda. The fire caused significant traffic delays as a large crowd gathered at the scene.
These incidents underscore ongoing road safety challenges on Nairobi’s highways, highlighting the urgent need for vigilance, adherence to traffic rules, and responsible driving to prevent accidents and loss of life.
