The death toll from Friday evening’s devastating road accident along the Kisumu–Kakamega Highway has risen to 25. Authorities confirmed that 21 victims died at the scene, while four others succumbed to their injuries shortly after arriving at hospital.
The tragic incident occurred at the Coptic roundabout, just outside Kisumu City, when a school bus belonging to AIC Naki High School reportedly lost control, veered off the road, and plunged into a ditch. The victims, largely from Nyakach, were relatives and friends returning from the funeral of a family member in Nyahera area.
Medical teams have mobilized to handle the large number of casualties. A total of 28 patients, including a child, are currently admitted and receiving treatment. Health facilities in the area have been placed on high alert, with extra personnel called in to ensure all injured victims receive prompt and adequate care.
A blood donation drive was scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM on Saturday, August 9, at Leresian Park within Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital. Additional drives are being organized to meet the urgent need for blood due to the high number of victims suffering significant blood loss.
County officials, emergency responders, and humanitarian organizations have been praised for their swift response in rescuing victims, providing emergency care, and supporting affected families. The Kenya Red Cross, medical teams, and security agencies worked hand-in-hand to manage the aftermath of the crash.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves across the country, with leaders expressing deep condolences to the bereaved families and wishing the injured a speedy recovery. Many have described the incident as a national loss, highlighting the devastating impact it has had on the Nyakach community and the wider Kisumu County.
