At least fifteen people were injured in a road accident on Sunday night, August 24, 2025, after a public service vehicle (PSV) collided with a cargo truck at Kibarani in Mombasa County.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident in a statement, saying members of the public were the first to respond, helping to rescue the injured before they were rushed to nearby hospitals.
“A road traffic accident involving a PSV matatu and a cargo container has occurred at Kibarani, just after Ug Holdings, Mombasa County,” the agency announced, adding that its personnel had joined a multi-agency team in the rescue efforts.
In a later update, the humanitarian agency confirmed that fifteen people sustained injuries but, fortunately, no fatalities were recorded. “Update: Fifteen people sustained injuries and were taken to health facilities by well-wishers. Thankfully, no lives were lost. The scene has been cleared,” the Kenya Red Cross said.
By press time, police were yet to issue a formal statement on the cause of the crash.
The accident caused heavy traffic along the busy highway before emergency teams cleared the wreckage to restore normal flow.
This latest crash comes just two days after Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir released a report highlighting the factors behind Kenya’s rising road carnage. According to the ministry, poor road infrastructure, reckless driving, and unroadworthy vehicles remain the leading contributors to accidents and fatalities on Kenyan roads.
“Our findings underscore that poorly maintained roads, reckless driving, and vehicle defects remain the leading causes of fatalities,” Chirchir said while unveiling the report.
He further revealed that the ministry would prioritize repairing high-risk sections of highways while working with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to enforce stricter compliance with KS 372:2019 standards through enhanced vehicle inspections.
Official data from the Ministry of Transport shows that between January 1 and August 10, 2025, a total of 2,933 people have lost their lives in road accidents across the country.
Sunday night’s crash adds to growing concerns over road safety in Kenya, with authorities now under pressure to implement swift interventions to curb the alarming trend.
