Five people have lost their lives in a tragic road accident along the Keroka–Masimba Road in Kisii County. The accident, which occurred on Monday, October 27, 2025, involved a lorry transporting molasses that veered off the road and rammed into a group of boda boda operators waiting by the roadside.
According to initial police reports, the lorry was heading towards Keroka town when the driver lost control, leading to the fatal crash. The impact was severe, leaving five people dead on the spot and several others with serious injuries. Witnesses at the scene said the lorry was moving at high speed before it swerved uncontrollably, plowing through the boda boda riders and their motorcycles.
Emergency responders, including police officers and local volunteers, quickly arrived at the scene to carry out rescue operations. The injured victims were rushed to Keroka Sub-County Hospital for urgent medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the same hospital’s mortuary for identification and postmortem examination.
Authorities have since launched investigations to determine the cause of the accident, with preliminary findings pointing to possible brake failure or mechanical malfunction. Traffic police have urged motorists to exercise caution, especially when driving on slippery or curved sections of the Keroka–Masimba Road, which has in the past recorded several fatal incidents.
The Kisii County Traffic Department has also emphasized the need for regular vehicle maintenance to prevent avoidable tragedies. They further appealed to boda boda riders to maintain safe distances from moving vehicles and avoid congregating along busy roadsides.
This latest incident adds to a worrying trend of road accidents reported across Kenya in recent weeks. Just two days earlier, six people were killed in a separate crash involving a private car and a truck along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near Gilgil. Authorities continue to call for heightened vigilance and stricter enforcement of traffic safety regulations to curb the rising number of fatalities on Kenyan roads.
